This plot hardly made any sense. Superman is supposed to be affected by the smallest piece of Kryptonite, but yet he can lift a whole island made of this exact material and transport it all the way to space? For a movie that's two and a half hours long, there's just too much 'downtime'. Way too much unnecessary set-pieces, bearing very little effect on the actually story. Brandon Routh as the Man Of Steel isn't bad but Kevin Spacey totally goes overboard as Lex Luthor. He is definitely NO Gene Hackman.

"Superman returns" - and not a moment too soon! The man of steel has been away for five years; during which time he has been into Deep Space to examine the ruins of his birth planet, Krypton. On returning to Earth: as Clark Kent, he gets his old reporter’s job back at the "Daily Planet"…and learns that Lois Lane is now not only a mother, but has also just been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for an article titled “Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman.” And arch-enemy Lex Luthor can still be counted on to come up with some world-class villainy. In this brand-new adventure story, newcomer Brandon Routh (to my pleasant surprise) proves to be an adequate lead substitute for the late Christopher Reeve. Kate Bosworth is a far prettier Lois Lane than Margot Kidder was – though whether the beauty enhancement really adds value to the role or not is a moot point. Kevin Spacey, though, is perfection personified as Lex Luthor – he’s magnificent! And veteran actress Eva Marie Saint also shines in the small role as Clark Kent’s adoptive mother. With a running time of 154 minutes, this picture is full value for money all the way.
