H? led the Viet Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the communist-governed Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and defeating the French Union in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu. He lost political power inside North Vietnam in the late 1950s, but remained as the highly visible figurehead president until his death. The former capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, after the Fall of Saigon, was renamed H? Ch Minh City in his honor. Nguy?n Sinh Cung was born in 1890 in Ho ng Tr Village, his mother's hometown. From 1895, he grew up in his paternal hometown of Kim Li n Village, Nam ? n District, Ngh? An Province, Vietnam. He had three siblings: his sister B?ch Li n (or Nguy?n Th?
