Three Years in France with the Guns - Being Episodes in the Life of a Field Battery (Paperback)

Three years in France with the Guns: Being Episodes in the life of a Field Battery was written in 1919. It is the story of the author's 38 months in France. He tells the story of his Battery and Brigade. This horse drawn artillery battery was one of many from the Royal Field Artillery who fought valiantly in France. These courageous men often fought with the Germans. This story of one officer and his fellow officers tells of battles in Loos, the Ypres Salient, Messines, Third Ypres, Cambrai, Arras and the Hindenburg Line which led to the end of the first World War. The story begins. "On a morning early in August, 1915, the Brigade disembarked at Havre without mishap to man, horse, or material, and proceeded to a Rest Camp on the outskirts of the town. We were in France at last The same evening the Batteries started to entrain, and every two hours a complete unit was dispatched up the line--to an unknown destination. The men received refreshments at various Haltes, and the horses were duly watered and fed, but the journey was, on the whole, long and tedious."
