Excerpt: ...man; How soon his modest mission church arose, O'ershadowing where his Christian brother slept What is the magic power attracts the mind To labours such as these? 'Tis love to souls. Christ's pledge of constant presence ever cheers The Missionary's heart--that conquers all, He has a boundless vision all his own; While eyes of others measure things by time, His compass circles--an Eternity. 8Hhere the Atlantic and Pacific wed Their World of waters, and the Cape of Storms Is lash'd by both their billows--near that land Romance bad peopled with gigantic sons, Whom truth hath humbl'd to a lowlier height--Where Patagonia's rugged mountains rise, Are tribes, and tribes so sadly destitute, Imagination fails to paint their state. Their stature low. Their bodies raimentless. Expos'd to the cold blast, the winter snows Melt on the mother's breast, when her poor babe Seeks Nature's nourishment. No tropic fruits To feast on. Ever from the corner'd rocks They pluck the shell-fish. Divers plod below The restless waters, as the women sit With baited fines, to win the guileless fish.' The dead seal washed ashore, to them a feast; The sea weeds form their richest garnishings. Humanity, without a Christian creed, Would call for momentary action there; But more, when Christian visitants proclaim, They know no God, have no 'hope in the world ' (c)ne who had been on Patagonia's shore Could not forget the shivering natives there; Their souls were dear to him, for he was Christ's--Himself the model of a Christian man; In every mercy he acknowledged God; In each event he recognised God's will; His body was the servant of his soul, And to God's glory both were dedicate; Truth on his lip--the Bible in his hand--The World behind his back--his eye on heaven--Consulting.
