Excerpt: ... ON MY BROTHER HENRY'S FIRST GOING TO SEA. Thou God whose voice can raise the deep, Or bid the ruffled billows sleep; Oh hear a Brother's heart-felt prayer, And let my Henry be thy care. When wintry winds viak-distract the main, And storms confuse the azure plain; Let thy protecting mercy save From all the perils of the wave. When hostile streamers proudly fly, And vollied thunders rend the sky, Oh may our youthful Hero prove The object of thy fostering love And when the dreadful cannon's roar, With fateful din affrights the shore, Great God of battles then bestow The laurel on his conqu'ring brow But never may his heart refuse, Sweet Mercy thy celestial dews: --, Still may my Henry, greatly brave, A fallen foe delight to save. And well I know his generous eye Will weep, when captive wretches sigh; His cheek, though never blanch'd by fear, Will yield to misery a tear. Oh may the meed of fair renown, With just reward his temples crown May grateful nations bless his name, And wreaths entwine of deathless fame I' Sept. 25,1810. Most fully did this beloved Brother realize the fondest wishes and expectations of his Friends. The situation of naval affairs, when he entered the Service, djd not afford many opportunities for the display of bravery; but on every occasion that presented itself, though a mere boy, he evinced the greatest coolness and intrepidity; and his conduct invariably obtained the approbation and regard of his Officers, and the respect and affection of the Ship's Company. But he gave proofs of a courage, superior to that which is called forth in the ardour of battle, by saving, at the risk of his own, the lives of two sailors, who fell overboard, on two different occasions.
