It is needless for your Commission to emphasize the importance and the grand results obtained by the Union Army in the capture of Vicksburg; that it separated the Confederacy in twain, and had a large, if not controlling, influence in its final overthrow, is certain. The number of Michigan Regiments represented, in the opinion of the Commission, would warrant the Legislature in making a liberal appropriation for the erection of a memorial in this Park to commemorate the services of Michigan soldiers engaged in that memorable campaign and siege, and we earnestly recommend that a generous sum be appropriated for that purpose. In closing, the Commission wish to place on record their great appreciation of the many kindnesses and courtesies extended to it by Captain Rigby and General Kountz. They were indefatigable and untiring, accompanying us upon the long dusty drives, and had reliable data compiled from Government reports, showing the positions occupied by the Union and Confederate troops, and the services rendered by them to the minutest detail Accompanying this report and a part thereof, is a blue print showing the Park and adjacent country, on which are indicated the positions occupied by Batteries "G" and "H," 1st Michigan Light Artillery. Also a copy of a map published by the United States authorities showing country around Vicksburg on which the Commission indicate the positions occupied by the 2nd. 8th, 12th, loth, 17th, 20th and 27th Michigan Infantry Regiments. As no legislative action can be taken on this report until the meeting of the Legislature in 1905, and inasmuch as the time was somewhat short in which the Commission had to arrive at all the facts and data desired--the law not being...
