How much more healthy then and pleasing to God must the feelings of those of the Jews have been, who instead of perplexing their minds with what was far too deep to explain, were contented to contemplate that love, to which they traced the groanings and tears of the compassionate Son of God on this occasion My brethren, we again undertake to answer this question to these miserable comforters of the sisters of Lazarus. This man could have done so, he could have caused that he should not have died, but yet he did not. Love, yes, love to them, prevented him--love to them, to you, to us. Love, too deep for us to penetrate, too wide to comprehend. He could, but if he did, --how would the Son of God be glorified by this manifestation of his Deity? How could this family, endeared to him, be honoured by the witness of the first-fruits of his victory over death? By their momentary sorrows shall be obtained the richer delights of gratitude, and truth, and love; and though "weeping may endure for a night, joy shall come in the morning." 2 Joy not only, when they shall see this very Lazarus grace once more their circle, but when they shall see in his restoration, the earnest of that glorious resurrection, when " all that are in their graves" shall hear the voice of the Son of God and come forth." 1 But now they arrive at t...
