And So this humble, earnest pastor continued to labor in the parish where Providence at first placed him, and where he had all along intended to live and die. We have seen that he refused opportunities to enter other fields, and that he thought much of permanency in the pastoral office. The following are a few thoughts from the last published article before referred to, this being upon the Remedy for Instability in the Pastoral Office. "Another remedy is mutual forbearance. In every relation of life we must bear and forbear. We must not expect perfection, and should commence, each party carrying the cloak of charity for the other. Hasty feeling and hasty action should never be indulged. "Another remedy is mutual love. A permanent pastorate, after all, is based upon the affections of pastor and people for each other. He can not tear himself away from them, because he loves them. They can not let him go, because they are attached to him. Can a father leave his children? Will the children send their father away? How can such a relation, strengthened by a thousand varied ties, be so readily sundered? "Another remedy is to give ourselves wholly to the work of the Lord. Let pastor and people be so busy in building up the walls of Jerusalem, as not to have time to think of a dissolution of the pastoral relation. Work on expecting permanence, not admitting foreign interierence by way of calls, nor allowing the subject of a change to be agitated. With the present inadequate supply of ministers, it is a suitable time for educating the church in the matter of a permanent ministry.
