The situation with histidine is worth comment. Histidine suffices as sole source of nitrogen and carbon for the smegma bacilli and grass bacilli with one exception. In this case, in contrast to what we have seen before, the leprosy bacilli and bacilli of cold blooded animals behave more like tubercle bacilli than like the unquestioned saprophytes. Table 3 shows another study in carbon metabolism. You will recall that ammonia was a suitable source of nitrogen for all of the group. Glycerol is likewise for all a sufficient source of carbon.
