II, &iB, #x iit J-' ' f-ft ihis"'ci j7.'of, hJi But we frequently observe, that some, in evacuating their urine, bend their bodies forward, in order to give the musctf-lar coats a greater power to empty the bladder: this remark made me recoiled that in many persons the pyramidal muscles of the abdomen are wanting: now should this be the cafe in those persons who are obliged to bend their bodies forward to facilitate the expulsion' of the urine, it will confirm the uses assigned to the musculi pyramida/es, by that justly celebrated and accurate anatomist Dr. Nicholls; for the ligaments, which were formerly the arachus and umbilical arteries, terminate in the navel; therefore in an erect posture they will abridge the pilearis of its office of making the fundus approach the cervix j to relax these ligaments, the body must be bent j the pytamidales we know arise from the qffapubis, and their tendons are inserted into the urnbUi&jts'; therefore when they act, they must pull the navel down towards the ofj'a pubist and will relax the suspensory ligaments, --and give the pilearis its full-'. '-i-t.-: power power to act. The use assigned by those who think these muscles assist the expulsion of the urine by their pressing on the bladder is inconsistent with anatomy and mechanics.
