The Old Man is more truth than Irish ballad. The story follows three generations, living on their ancestral farm near Cavan in the mid 1800s, when Ireland was a country torn with revolution, disease, famine, and death. It reveals father and son bonds, how the family all lived together, and how sons react when their fatheras lives are unexpectedly cut short. It describes the family struggle to deal with rotting crops, the loss of their father, and the realization they are battling to survive. While crossing the Atlantic with other immigrants onboard one of the acoffin ships,a tragedy leads to a haunting conclusion.
