Crest Park (Paperback)

Huck Finn Meets Ozzie and Harriett
In Crest Park, local resident Roy Davis documents the early settlement of Windham by his Munson ancestors, the history of the boarding house industry in the northern Catskill Mountains and his marvelous childhood there which was a combination of Huck Finn and Ozzie and Harriet.
First settled in 1785, the picturesque town of Windham, New York, nestled in a rural valley in the Catskill Mountains, reflected the immense character of its inhabitants. It embodied all the admirable qualities of small town America.
Windham eventually became a popular vacation destination. The resort business was started by farmers boarding guests for the summer. Several of these farmers eventually built larger "boarding houses" that catered to the thousands of vacationers fleeing the stifling heat of New York City every summer. This is the story of one such boarding house, Crest Park, and the experiences of a boy growing up there in the mid-twentieth century.
Departing his beloved, bucolic town in 1965 at age 18 for a three-year enlistment in the U.S. Army, which included a year in Viet Nam as a helicopter crew chief, Roy entered a world that bore little resemblance to his beloved Windham.
Crest Park is a must read for Americana or Catskill Mountain history enthusiasts.
