When 30-year-old Dean Nicholson set off from Scotland to cycle around the world, his aim was to learn as much as he could about our troubled planet. But he hadn't bargained on the lessons he'd learn from his unlikely companion. Three months after leaving home, on a remote road in the mountains between Montenegro and Bosnia, he came across an abandoned kitten. Something about the piercing eyes and plaintive meowing of the bedraggled little cat proved irresistible. He couldn't leave her to her fate, so he put her on his bike and then, with the help of local vets, nursed her back to health. Soon on his travels with the cat he named Nala, they forged an unbreakable bond - both curious, independent, resilient and adventurous. The video of how they met has had 20 million views and their Instagram has grown to almost 750k followers - and still counting! Experiencing the kindness of strangers, visiting refugee camps, rescuing animals through Europe and Asia, Dean and Nala have already learned that the unexpected can be pretty amazing. Together with Garry Jenkins, writer with James Bowen of the bestselling A Street Cat Named Bob, Dean shares the extraordinary tale of his and Nala's inspiring and heart-warming adventure together.

I read “Nala’s World” in one sitting – not able to put it down. Not only is this an incredible story of the love between man and animal – it is a story of hope and optimism for the human race. There is so much evil and animal abuse worldwide, that it is inspiring to read about one man’s care and concern for a stray cat. And not only for Nala, but for the abandoned stray dogs whose lives he saved along the road – and for all the animal shelters he is contributing funds to through this incredible journey. The narrative is entertaining and would have made an excellent travelogue anyway, even without Nala – but with her, it is truly exceptional! Getting to know the locals of various countries – and seeing how those with the very least offer the most to strangers is a lesson only learnt through travel. As a cat owner myself, I especially appreciate the keen insight Dean has into the feline character. The descriptions of Nala’s behaviour and reactions are very realistic! No less are Dean’s insights and appreciation of the culture and people of the many nations that he encountered along the way, including an eye-opening account of meeting the inhabitants of a Greek refugee camp. I was particularly moved by the description of his rescue of the abandoned puppy, Ghost. It is sad that Ghost never made it – but he had a few happy months, due to Dean saving his life. How wonderful to know there are still people out there like Dean Nicholson! The vets of various nationalities and amazing selfless people running shelters off their own bats, as well as those offering hospitality and care to Dean and Nala are also worthy of note. Not having the opportunity to see some rarely visited countries such as Georgia and Azerbaijan, I am thankful to Dean for giving me a glimpse of these countries. His videos on YouTube are also well worth watching. As a bonus - what a pleasure to read excellent English! I am eagerly following the travels of Dean and Nala on YouTube and Instagram – and can not wait for the sequel to “Nala’s World”. The cherry on the top is that Dean is contributing his profits to many worthwhile animal charities. The world needs so many more Dean Nicholsons. Reading this book has been an uplifting experience.
