"Discovery World" offers non-fiction guided readers for 4-7 year olds with links to the wider curriculum. The levelled texts are suitable for guided reading, covering topics that link to the wider curriculum. Model texts help develop writing skills, and the books cover NLS text types. All the books in "Discovery World" have clear links to subjects in the wider curriculum, and are cross-referenced to the QCA Schemes of Work. The books cover the subjects taught every day in the classroom, helping to integrate literacy with the wider curriculum. "Discovery World" gives full coverage of all the NLS text types for Key Stage 1 Non-Fiction. The scheme is cross-referenced to the NLS non-fiction objectives for both reading and writing, and introduces children to a wide variety of non-fiction features. Full NLS information is provided in the teaching materials. Guided readers come in six levels across Key Stage 1. The text has been carefully graded to ensure steady progression in reading and writing skills. Each title is also correlated to Book Bands. "Discovery World" provides examples of all the different non-fiction text types, giving children clear models for developing their own writing. In addition, the two "Writing Skills Big Books" focus on developing non-fiction writing skills in a whole-class context. Suggestions for shared, guided, independent and extended writing are provided in the teaching materials. Planning and teaching guides have the information needed to plan and run literacy lessons, including cross-reference charts for medium to long-term planning and more detailed weekly planners for individual lessons.
