HE sainted man, whose name stands at the head of this page, was beloved by all to whom he was known, and when the news was flashed over the telegraph wires that "James of Birmingham" was dead, thousands wept the loss of one of the most holy men that the nineteenth century had produced. He left behind him an unperishable fame. "He being dead yet speaketh." When the late Dr. Winter Hamilton, of Leeds, handed tothe printer the last sheets of the Memoir of his beloved friend Ely, he is reported to have used those memorable words, "And let me beg that you be quick about it, sir, for Ministers are soon forgotten." Alas that it should be so. And yet how common it 19. The man who has taught so many thousands how to live, and how to dio, is soon forgotten. The name of the hero of a hundred fights is engraven on marble. A monument is erected to perpetuate the memory of the statesman; but Ministers are soon forgotten. Their descendants are often despised. Their poor, unprovided widows are neglected in the daily ministration. Their children are to be found sometimes in the most abject circumstances. Ministers are soon forgotten. Recently the writer visited an old, worn-out, Superannuated Minister, no matter of what denomination. Ho was a Minister of Christ, and that was enough for us. We had often witnessed his self-denying labors on behalf of others, and when he left "the active work," we felt anxious to see him in his retirement. And so we went. Poor old man, he was glad to see us. We had not met for many a day. And we talked till long after midnight, ...
