The Liawep, the anthropologist explained to Edward Marriott, were not so much lost as mislaid. They knew where they were, their neighbours had known where they were; only the white man hadn't known and for this reason they were 'lost'. Intrigued by the report of the discovery of a 'new' tribe, Marriott had flown to Papua New Guinea hoping to visit them, but had been unable to gain permission as he found himself caught in power games. The official who had 'discovered' the tribe wanted to recapture the lost glories of the 1930s, when adventurers first swaggered into the Papuan forests and made their fortunes, while the various Christian missions vied to be the first to 'civilize' the Liawep, though to their chagrin a native missionary had already found his way to the village. Driven to desperation, Marriott finally organized his own unofficial expedition into the forest, relying on the locals for help and guidance, and after many misadventures found his way to the Liawep village. It's unclear what he expected to find but his romantic illusions were quickly shattered as he was drawn into the politics of the situation. Marriott's account of his New Guinea adventure is a salutary tale of a well-meaning, but misguided interference in the lives of others and exposes the dangers inherent in investigating our world. (Kirkus UK)
Part travel-book, part adventure story, this is an account of Edward Marriott's trip to Papua New Guinea to discover the "lost" Liawep tribe. When a natural tragedy affects the village, the tribe hold Marriott responsible for the death of a woman and her children.
