In the same year he petitioned Charles I. to restore him to the Dukedom of Norfolk, which his grandfather, Thomas Howard, had lost by attainder in the reign of Elizabeth. Charles, however, conceded only by creating him Earl of that place, when he disappointed, and probably foreseeing the troubles arising in England, resigned his staff as High-Steward, and set out to travel. The society of his Countess and his grandchildren rendered this pleasing; and though he did return again to England, yet in the February of l64l-2, he it left to behold it no more. After passing several years in Holland, France, and Italy, when he was about to leave Padua for his native country, the Earl of Arundel fell sick at that City, and died there, in the presence of his son and grandehild, on October 4th, l646, aged 55.
