Albertine Schooner 155 Lord Londesborough R.W.Y.C. Dione 44 Mr P. French R.C.y.C. The course was about thirty miles in length, extending from the Royal Cork Yacht Club quay to the Spit Light, thence to a flag-boat anchored to the eastward of the harbour, round the Sovereign Islands and home, finishing opposite the Admiralty Pier. The Albertine and Fiona sailed on equal terms, but they respectively allowed the Dione 12min. and 9min. 40sec. The start took place opposite the Royal Cork Yacht Club House, at one o'clock, and the positions of the yachts were: the Albertine outside, Dione centre, and Fiona inside. As stated, the wind was from the S.E., but just as the starting gun was fired it became very light, and the Dione, having a more forward position, and being lighter than either of her competitors, got away first, the Fiona following slowly, and the Albertine, owing to her great size and the lightness of the wind, barely moving. From the direction of the wind, it became necessary for the yachts to sail on the starboard tack, and the Dione in this way went rather quickly down the stream, as far as the King's Beach, followed by the Albertine. The Fiona from the start went about two hundred yards on the starboard tack, when her course was altered to the port, and she sailed slowly towards the bank opposite Spike Island. This was a fortunate move for the Fiona, as she had scarcely put about when the wind freshened off the bank, the effect of which was to drive her at good speed straight for the Spit Light.
