They Carried Her Coffin (Paperback)

The second book in the 'Dixie' series moves on to September 1993 and eight men, Sef Meyer, Doug Hardy, Ricky Hanson, Billy Collins, Dave (Sandy) Sanders, John Meyer, Chris Lievers and Andrew MacFay who were coffin bearers twenty years earlier meet for their annual reunion to commemorate the death of a very special young woman who touched all their lives and left them with profound memories. Sef is still single and a magnet for all the women in town but his son, Kurt, has unknowingly become the young pretender and a rival for the beautiful, Kelly Farrow, even though she is in a long-term relationship with another man. Sef and Kurt's impetuous acts threaten the strong bond between father and son, and endanger other firm friendships. Doug is trapped in a seemingly loveless marriage to Lesley where each of them is involved with another lover and yet something still holds them together. Is it a past secret they both share or the love they have never acknowledged? A long bitter feud with Sef and problems at work with his business partner and elder brother, Mick, only complicate Doug's life even further. But there are more secrets and each of the eight men and their families are affected by them in different and sometimes tragic ways as they are all unveiled over the next 24 days. As their lives implode, it makes them wonder at their actions all those many years ago. Their stories are told in 24 chapters each detailing one day, first from the standpoint of the men who carried her coffin, then from eight of their children or siblings and finally back to the men for the concluding chapters. There is a mixture of humour, romance, sex, violence, tragedy and sadness as the reader catches up withthe men's lives and those around them and is also introduced to new characters. A series of carefully interwoven events conclude a cycle of life for many of the characters but also lays the foundations for the years ahead and the next book in the saga.
