Madrigal is a witch of today. She is a lively, youthful dinner lady at the local school. As the first chapter opens, she is completing a correspondence course in witchcraft, watched by her cat, Sootin. Nervously she attempts her very first spell and just manages to bring her clown doll Razamataz to life. Madrigal warns him that the spell will be broken if any grown-up discovers he can walk and talk. Each of the chapters is a story in itself, but Soothin and Raz are featured regularly and often cause the spells to miss their target! Most of the incidents involve the school children, for whom Madrigal often becomes their last resort. Happily even the spells that misfire seem to bring unexpected benefit, even for the victims; but somehow teachers and parents never suspect benevolent witchcraft.
