Unless when Alma and Jessy's songs needed a piano accompaniment, the parlors of Villa Speranza were quite deserted. Prosper and Frank, who had rooms near by, came up every morning, and the day was spent in rambles over the hillsides, in rides or drives to the more distant picturesque points, or in sitting under the "holm-oaks" and laurels, reading aloud sometimes, sometimes looking at the sea and talking of everything and nothing. They were all in vacation; even Frank. His father had written to him, " Unless you wish it very much, don't begin again in Germany, but see what you can of Italy now, arid come back when our friends do. I must have you with me in the spring, if I can; I shall need your help; and you will not want to stay away, should affairs take the turn they threaten to. But in any case don't quarrel with the Verviers." Frank determined that his father should have what help he could give; and so finally withdrew from the German university, with less regret than he had expected at not completing his course. But the Major's other hints seemed unreasonable. News travelled so slowly then, that Frank had no idea how great a storm was gathering. He wrote and engaged passage by the same steamer which was to take his friends home; then gave himself up to the life he was leading. It was not altogether one of enjoyment. As he found himself more in love with Jessy every day, hindrances and discouragements sprang up before his mind's eye. Could he think of marriage--he debated in his heart--while dependent on his father, and that father's affairs in so uncertain a condition? Might not Jessy fancy him a fortune-hunter, or object to...
