The Council of the Union that met in St. Louis two years ago made a new departure in opening the eyes of the delegates to the boundless opportunities of the Jews of America. A more thorough organic union of congregations, a building up of Jewish life in small communities, a heartier co-operation of all organizations of national scope, the gathering of Jewish statistics for religious, civil and economical purposes, the speedy endowment of the Hebrew Union College and the paramount infl'ience of Samuel Woolner, President. to the subordinate committees with whom they co-operated. A brief statement of the facts by way of contrast may prove interesting. The College has now a subscribed endowment fund of over $400,000. The Union has the largest enrollment of congregations since its establishment thirty-one years ago. As successor to Drs. Wise and Mielziner to the presidency of the Hebrew Union College, one of the greatest scholars in the American Jewish pulpit, Dr. Kaufman Kohler, of New York, has been secured. The grand missionary work ot organizing congregations and Sabbath schools in small communities was entrusted to a veritable genius in that direction, Rabbi George Zepin, who in one year has built up the Jewish life of sixty communities, comprising five thousand souls.
