In obstetrics, the great aim of its adepts seems to be to run counter to the Biblical dictum, 'In pain shalt thou bring forth children.' Chloroform, ether and hypnotism are all called upon turn toy turn to relieve the suffering female from the pain which is the prelude to the joys of maternity. It is instructive to learn that, mistaking a seven months' pregnancy in a woman who denied its possibility, some surgeons in Servia punctured the uterus with a fatal result. Oophorectomy, or, as we generally term it, laparotomy, is evidently looked upon with disfavour in France. Considerations of space preclude a more detailed consideration of the many subjects of interest contained in this volume, and we must content ourselves with referring the reader to it for further information. A Second edition of this deservedly popular little text-book has been rendered necessary by the issue of the new Pharmacopceia, and advantage has been taken of the opportunity to modify whatever appeared capable of improvement in the first edition. The subject of the action of medicines has been considerably developed in the present volume, and, by the employment of heavier type, due prominence has been given to the salient features.
