The rocks of the Borders record much of the Palaeozoic history of the Iapetus ocean closing, then the building and subsequent breakdown of huge mountains, as well as a history of deserts, rivers and forests that came as the land mass of which Scotland forms part went on a northerly migration. Geology tells also of volcanoes large and small and how their existence is indelibly recorded in the Borders hills.
