Straightforwardness, clearness, teiseness, and combined with these graceful ness, aie its leading characteristics, No attempt indeed is made at eloquence Caesarhimself called it * Com mentaries, ' meaning peiiaps that it was to be regarded rather as an outline than a literary history, as if he was just stipptymg the raw material, which a great historian might work up.
