For Christ is the Word of God: the manifest Truth of the Godhead: and He came amongst us to bring us life through the Truth which is Himself. Christ, then, is specifically the divine Truth, Who in the beginning "was with God and Who is God "--the divine Truth manifested and manifesting Itself from all eternity in the life of the Godhead: and He is the divine Truth by Whose creative will the world was made; in Whom is the true life of all who are. For to St. John as he looks upon the Christ, life is truth and falseness is death. We live just in so far as we live in the truth: and we live the eternal life of the sons of God only in so far as we live according to the truth which is made manifest in Christ. St. John thus establishes at once the relation in which the world exists towards our divine Lord and He towards the world. He, the divine Truth, is the Life of our life: whatever of life is in us is from Him, the eternal Truth: as created by Him we are divinely constituted in truth; we fulfil our destiny in consciously and deliberately recognizing the truth and accepting it as the law of our life. "To those who received Him He gave the power to become sons of God." Thus we, too, fulfil our lives as we manifest in ourselves the life of God and witness to the truth which is in God: we, too, in our proper life are a manifestation of and witness to the divine life: and thus between us and the eternal Word there is a direct relation of character and purpose: as the life and activity of the eternal Word is a divine witnessing to the life in God, so the world's life, and still more the self-conscious life of man, is in its proper activity, ...
