Each person stands in his place in the list under his full name, titles, etc., but in references under other headings, for economy of space, the name is shortened as much as possible, e.g. Baldwin II du Bourg (or de Rethel) King of Jerusalem, appears as Baldwin II of Jerusalem; and to avoid confusion of the different per-sons bearing the same first name, the following distinctions have been made: Baldwin VII, Hapkin, Count of Flanders, appears as Baldwin Hapkin; Eustace, son of Stephen, as Eustace; Fulk IV Ruchin, Count of Anjou, as Fulk Rechin; Geoffrey V Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, as Geoffrey Plantagenet; Henry I Beau-clerc, as Henry I (including the period before his accession); Henry II, as Henry Plantagenet; Malcolm III Canmore, King of Scotland, as Malcolm Canmore; Matilda, wife of Henry I, as Editha; Matilda, wife of Stephen, as Queen Matilda; Matilda, daughter of Henry I, as the Empress; Ralph Flam bard, as Flambard; Robert de Belesmc, as de Belesme; Robert FitzHamon, as FitzHamon; Robert I of Flanders as Robert the Prison; Robert, Earl of Gloucester, as Robert of Glouces-ter, or Earl Robert; Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, as Guiscard; Robert II, Duke of Normandy, as Duke Robert; William I, the Conqueror, as William I; William II, Rufus, as Rufus.
