Seventeen teams competed for the NRL Premiership during the season which culminated in a grand final between the first grand final played at Stadium Australia. The St George Illawarra Dragons became the first joint- venture club to appear in the grand final, which was against the Melbourne Storm, who won the premiership in only their second season.
