Being one of the lesser studied African carnivores it has been listed as vulnerable only in 2002. The black-footed cat is one of the smallest cat species. Males weigh 1.9 kilograms (4.2 lb) on average, females only about 1.3 kilograms (2.9 lb). They reach a total body length of 36 to 63 centimetres (14 to 25 in). The tail is about 15 centimetres (5.9 in) long and shoulder height about 25 centimetres (9.8 in).
