Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo (Paperback)

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Spanish hereditary ducal title of Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo, Grandee of Spain 1st Class (Duque de Ciudad Rodrigo) was conferred on the British General Arthur Wellesley, then 1st Viscount Wellington in January 1812, quickly after his important victory at the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo that same year, as a victory title. It is held by his descendants the Dukes of Wellington. However, it used to pass to heirs general, while the title Duke of Wellington passes to heirs male. Due to this difference, the titles may separate, as they did when the Dukedom of Ciudad Rodrigo passed to the 7th Duchess and the Dukedom of Wellington passed to her uncle. The 7th Duchess ceded her title to her uncle so both titles are now held by Arthur Valerian Wellesley (b. 1915). Moreover, in 2006 the Cortes Generales (Spanish Parliament) passed an act which establishes gender equality in succession to titles of nobility. Therefore, from then onwards, the dukedom will pass to the first-born child regardless of gender. The heir apparent to the Dukedom of Ciudad Rodrigo is the Duke's eldest son, Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Douro.
