The episodes were directed by Kenji Kamiyama, animated by Production I.G, and produced by the Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Committee, which included Animax, Bandai Visual, Dentsu, Kodansha, and Victor Entertainment. The episodes were originally aired between October 1, 2002 and March 25, 2003 in Japan on Animax and SKY PerfecTV!. The episodes aired in North America on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming bloc from November 7, 2004 to May 8, 2005, and in Canada on YTV from September 10, 2005 to March 18, 2006. The main plot follows the members of Public Security Section 9 as they investigate the background behind the Laughing Man incident: the kidnapping and subsequent release of a Japanese CEO by a sophisticated hacker.
