He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, primarily serving in the Western Theater. Morton returned to the field in May, serving as the Chief Engineer in the IX Corps under General Ambrose Burnside. On June 17, 1864, during the Siege of Petersburg, Morton was surveying the area in front of General Orlando B. Wilcox's division, which was about to attack, when he was shot in the chest and killed. His body was returned to Philadelphia and he was buried with military honors at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Following his death, Morton received the following posthumous brevets in the Regular Army: Brevet Lieutenant Colonel - for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Stones River, TN (January 2, 1863), Brevet Colonel - for good conduct at Chickamauga, GA (September 20, 1863), Brevet Brigadier General - for gallant and meritorious services at the assault on Petersburg, VA (June 17, 1864).
