Alfred John Gardyne Drummond de Chastelain OC CH CMM CD (born July 30, 1937) is a retired Canadian soldier and diplomat who heads the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning. De Chastelain was born in Romania and educated in England and in Scotland before his family immigrated to Canada in 1954. There, de Chastelain enrolled in military college and went on to pursue a career in the Canadian Army, rising through the ranks to eventually be twice appointed Chief of the Defence Staff, with a year serving as Canada's ambassador to the United States in between. In 1995, de Chastelain became involved in the Northern Ireland peace process and eventually focused on the disarmament of paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland.
