World War I Songs - A History and Dictionary of Popular American Patriotic Tunes with Selected Lyrics (Hardcover, illustrated edition)

With the exception of World War II, no event in U.S. history stimulated the nations songwriters into action more than World War I. Al Bryan, Gus Edwards, Lew Brown, Harry Ruby and James McHugh were just a few of the composers and lyricists to pen songs during the war years. Over 35,000 war related marches, patriotic anthems and ballads were registered for copyright. Part One of this unique reference work examines how the music of World War I reflected the mood of the country, from isolationist songs such as Darl MacBoyle and W. Roughsedges "(Whether Friend or Foe, Theyre Brothers) When Theyre Dreaming of Home Sweet Home" to such fiery tunes as Sidney Mitchell and Harry Rubys "You Keep Sending Em Over and Well Keep Knocking Em Down." The second part is a listing of all World War I songs verified as published in the United States. Each entry includes title, lyricist, composer and year of publication. Part Three provides the complete lyrics to over 300 songs of the era; their key words appear in the index, which otherwise includes persons, song titles and subjects.
