Church Plate, Advowson, etc. HERE is a handsome set of silver- gilt modern communion plate. The cup is Sin. high. The bowl is goblet-shaped, and 4in. in diameter. It is quite plain. The stem is reeded and knobbed. The knob is decorated with deep panels of moulding and foliage alternately. The foot is 5in. in diameter. It has a band of bold cross-hatching within the filleted edge, and is decorated with four enamelled medallions, (i) the crucifixion in silver on a blue ground. (2) S. Peter, all silver. (3) Virgin and child, silver on red ground. (4) S. George, all silver. The paten belonging to this set is 7in. in diameter and gilt. It is of a plain platter shape with a moulded edge. The marks on both cup and paten are Victorian. The flagon is of silver gilt and crystal, of a Gothic design to match above. This set of plate was presented to the parish church of Dunster by the Sisters of Clewer. The church also possesses an Elizabethan cup and cover of the customary design. The cup is7 in. high. The bowl is slightly bell-shaped, and is decorated with two bands of the customary conventional foliage, each band being divided by upright sprays in four places. The knob of the stem is decorated with hyphens. The foot is moulded, and has a band of hyphen decoration near junction with stem, and around the edge a band of egg and tongue moulding. Marks: 2 offic. Maker's 1. P. within shaped shield. Date letter 1573. Paten No. II forms the cover to this cup, and is 3in. in diameter. On button foot is inscribed 1573 within a fillet. On the cover itself is a band of foliage within double fillets corresponding to the bands on the bowl. There is also a silver dish zojin. in diameter, standing on a foot 3]in. high, which is boldly splayed and moulded. Marks: mark of William ...
