Bibliographic Guide to Dance 2003 (Large print, Hardcover, large type edition)

A truly comprehensive source of recent reference materials for students and scholars, the annual "Bibliographic Guide to Dance" lists materials cataloged by the Dance Division of The New York Public Library. The "Guide" serves in part as an annual "Supplement to the Dictionary Catalog of the Dance Collection," The Research Libraries of the New York Public Library (G.K. Hall, 1974).

The New York Public Library's Dance Division (formerly the Dance Collection) is considered the most comprehensive archive of material relating to dance that has ever been assembled in one location. Acquisition has not been limited to books and pamphlets. Rather, the subject itself has determined the nature of the material to be collected: motion picture films and videotapes; photographs; prints; original drawings and designs for decor and costume; manuscripts and letters; oral history tapes; scrapbooks; clippings and reviews; programs; playbills and posters; and notated dance scores. Ninety-seven percent of the Collection's holdings are non-book in nature. The aim has been to preserve records of every aspect -- historical, theatrical, therapeutic, or economic -- of every style of dance, whether modern, ballet, expressionistic, social, theatrical, variety, folk or burlesque.

The "Dictionary Catalog" and "Bibliographic Guide" supplements are computer-produced and filed. All entries are integrated into one alphabet, bringing together all materials on a given subject or personality. They include bibliographic information for a wide range of materials: books, pamphlets, microfilms, periodicals, music scores, dance notation scores, ballet libretti, manuscripts, photographs, slides, lithographs and engravings, original decor and costume designs, drawings, recorded interviews, sound recordings, motion pictures, videotapes, clipping files, programs, scrapbooks, and other memorabilia.

Access to materials listed is by main entry (personal author, corporate body, e.g. the name of a society, a dance company, or a governmental agency, etc.) which indicates primary responsibility for the authorship or issuance of a particular work or through added entries where authorship may be of a secondary nature (e.g., co-authors, editors, compilers, arrangers, translators, illustrators, photographers, engravers, etc.). Additional access to materials is also provided by distinctive titles, titles of choreographed dance works, folk and social dance titles, series titles, geographical names, names of individuals, and by headings covering most aspects of the subject of dance.
