Strategies in Vaccine Design (Hardcover, illustrated edition)

This book is about the immune response induced by different infectious agents and following vaccination. In contrast to most current vaccines developed without input from immunologists, the development of vaccines to persistent infections like malaria and AIDS requires a detailed knowledge of the nature of the protective immune responses and how to induce them. This volume discusses the role of both antibodies and T cell responses in controlling and clearing some viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. The contributions of different T cell subsets are discussed at length. The basic immunological requirements of a vaccine, the different approaches to achieving these, the importance of the antigen dose, the roles of different adjuvants and different ways of antigen presentation are also dealt with.
