Through the excavations of the last decades in Asia Minor, and from the discoveries of papyri in Egypt, our knowledge of the surroundings of the first Christian congregations in Syria and Asia Minor has been vastly enriched. Theological science, also, has gained much valuable material for the investigation of the inner life of these congregations. The result has been a deeper and clearer understanding of the Acts of the Apostles and the New Testament Epistles. It seemed to Mr. Brockes a task well worth while to sketch as graphically as possible a picture of the times by using the most valuable of this material.
