And observe, brethren, how needful is this continual visitation. How many of our people are of necessity absent from our public ministrations How many have through ignorance strayed from the fold All these ought to be visited. For those sheep who cannot feed with the rest, are they not to be fed? And those who wantonly wander and seek pastures for themselves, are they not to be brought back into the good pastures? This indeed is one of the hardest duties to which the Pastor is called. From the number of those who have strayed, as well as their perverseness andj self-will, it requireth no small courage, wisdom, and patience to perform the task of bringing them back. And in truth, this is the work, not so much of a pastor as of an Evangelist; for the Pastor's work is to watch over and feed the flock when gathered in; but the work of gathering in requireth in these days of half-heathen Christianity the work of that wholly distinct ministry which did exist in the first ages of the church, the ministry of an Evangelist.
