The word "commandment" seems harsh and demanding. No wonder that we hear proscriptions, laws, and requirements. That makes the Ten the kind of legalism from which most of us try to escape. The word "commandment" itself is the problem. Early English translators took the Hebrew term and gave it the English word "commandment." Hebrew scholars tell us that the Hebrew word is more accurately translated as word, saying, or utterance. That softens the harshness of commandment.
