He graduated from Northwestern University and the Manhattan School of Music. His teachers included David Diamond and Ludmila Uhlela. Before turning full time to composition, he had a varied career as a woodwinds performer with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Bolshoi Ballet, and the Royal Ballet.
