As early as 1808, a newspaper was established at New Lisbon, called the Ohio Patriot, and in the files of that old newspaper may be found a reasonably well authenticated record of events as they transpired in the early days of the county. That same newspaper is published to-day, so that its history is almost co-extensive with the history of the county. There seems to be some dispute as to the first settlement in the county. It is claimed by some that a man named Carpenter, who settled with his family at West Point, in Madison township, in 1797, was the first white settler, but the weight of the testimony seems to point to John Quinn, who settled, and constructed a log cabin, at Calcutta, St. Clair township, as early as 1/92, as the first settler. This man Quinn was a hunter, and led a roving life, but he lived near Calcutta for a considerable length of time, before the beginning of the present century and is no doubt entitled to the honor of being called the first settler of Columbiana county. Liverpool township was settled as early as 1795. A Scotch settlement was made in Madison township, in 1802. A colony of friends occupied a part of Fairfield township in 1803, also a part of Middleton township. Wayne township was first ...
