F The French generally use the verb Avoir, and nouns preceded by De, in stating the size of any object; whereas the English employ the verb " to be," and adjectives: 1. Cette tour a 40 metres de hauteur.1 That tower is 40 metres high. 2. La riviere a 100 metres de largeur. The river is 100 metres wide. 469. ST De appears before the numeral when the object measured is not followed by a verb: Une piece de troiB metres de longueur, A room three metres long (or with the verb, Une piece qui a (468.) trois metres de longueur). 470. F Sur is generally used for "by" or "and," when comparing length, height, or breadth, &c: 1. That wen IS sixty metres deep by Ce puits A soixante metres de profondeur seven in circumference. sur sept de circonference. 2. That tree IS thirty metres in height, Cet arbre A trente metres de hauteur, and five in circumference. sur cinq de circonference. 3.
