Louis Moreau Gottschalk used a large number of pianos and pianists for his popularly acclaimed 'monster concerts' in the Americas. By the early 20th century, a mass of transcriptions and arrangements had accumulated. Later in the century, such important 20th-century composers as Ives, Stravinsky, Antheil, Orff, Dallapiccola, Milhaud, and others composed original works for the medium.
