Urban Trees - A Survey of Street Trees in England (Paperback)

Little information was available on the structure and health of urban trees until in 1989 the Forestry Commission undertook an analysis of 3,600 trees, made up of 120 trees in each of 30 randomly selected towns and cities throughout England. Five genera, Acer, Sorbus, Prunus, Betula and Tilia, constituted 70% of trees surveyed. Findings included information on vandal damage, tree growth and condition, tree age, planting positions and soil type. This survey will contribute to recommendations on future planning and design of urban tree planting and the performance of trees.
