This inquiry into the Met Office looks at its ownership by the MOD; finances; and its objectives, performance and key targets. The Committee emphasises the importance of continued investment in the Met Office and welcomes the Minister's statement supporting future funding. It is also impressed by the importance placed on the Met Office's work by the MoD. However, the key performance targets are not seen as an effective way of providing direction, whereas the customer-supplier relationship has an important role in improving performance. The Met Office should continue to develop its commercial abilities and should not become risk-averse. The Committee also recommends the decision, of the MoD to downgrade the post of the Chief Executive, should be reconsidered.
