Free movement of workers in the EU - fourteenth report of session 2008-09, report, together with formal minutes and oral evidence (Paperback)

The European Scrutiny Committee publishes its 14th report of session 2008-09, "Free Movement of Workers in the EU" (HCP 324, ISBN 9780215529534). The Committee has been scrutinising a report from the European Commission on the movement to the UK of workers from countries which joined the EU in 2006 and from Bulgaria and Romania, which joined in 2007. On 4 February, in its 7th report of session 2008-09 ("HCP 19-vi", ISBN 9780215526403), the Committee commented on the Communication and announced that it would invite oral evidence about the document and the Posting of Workers Directive from Lord Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, and Mr. Phil Woolas, the Minister of State for Borders and Immigration. The report and the transcripts of the evidence sessions will now provide the papers for a session of the European Committee to which the ESC has referred the topic for a public debate. The European committee to which it will be referred will be open to any and all MPs to attend and take part in questioning the government minister and speaking on the topic. Lord Mandelson and Mr. Woolas gave their evidence on 9 and 11 March. The full transcript of what they said is annexed to the report. The Committee has recommended that the issues raised by the Commission's Communication should now be debated by European Committee B.
