Catwoman (DVD)

,
Glossy, big-budget live action film based on the D.C. comic character created by Bob Kane. Halle Berry stars as Patience Phillips, a talented but excrutiatingly shy graphic artist who, in a mysterious twist of fate, transforms into a woman with the stealth, power and incredible heightened senses of a cat. Sleek, agile and extremely dangerous, she begins a series of nocturnal crime sprees across the city, treading the thin line between good and bad. But things get complicated when police officer Tom Lone (Benjamin Bratt), with whom Patience has begun a tentative romance, becomes fascinated by the elusive Catwoman to a point well past the call of duty.

Catwoman is no stranger to Batman followers, in which she seems more intent on providing merely a love interest rather than being a crime fighter per se. In this movie, however, she is made out to be a blend of Spider Man, Batman, Zorro, Wonder Woman, and even Thomasina among others. However, it is still very entertaining live-action/comic bosk stuff, and one wonders why it was given a “PG-13) censorship rating! The whole family should be entitled to watch this one. To outline the story: Patience Phillips (a wonderful performance by Halle Berry) works for a cosmetics company that is about to introduce a new skin cream called Beau-Line, that the firm maintains will reverse the effects of aging. However, as Patience visits the factory where it is being manufactured, she overhears a discussion between the scientist, Dr. Ivan Slavicky (Peter Wingfield), and Laurel Hedare (Sharon Stone), the wife of company owner George Hedare (Lambert Wilson); speaking about the dangerous side effects from continued use of the product. Laurel's guards discover Patience and are ordered to dispose of her. By saving a stray cat that is stuck on a high balcony, Patience is “rewarded” with a life of being a catlike human...during which she seeks revenge on those who had “put her down” while stll a complete human. Sharon Stone is absolutely wonderful as Laurel, the villainess; while her screen husband (Lambert Wilson) is also a wonderful man to dislike. Note that this is actually a four-star film; but spoiled with acrobatic scenes that go on for too long, and the “rescued” cat, which is obviously not a real feline, as it moves in jerks, rather than with a a smooth slink!
