"Moreover that upon ye sd Saturday there was upon a plaine neare to ye sd Earles house a game called a Prison-barr-play, performed by 20 young men and that ye sd Earles Steward, John Broadhurst, did desire ye sd deponent to procure some of ye said young men to play and told him y' it was his Lords desire to them and that hee would give them a Guinny to make ye Duke that sport. That after ye Play was over yc sd young men came to ye house of ye sd deponent and some of them said in his hearing that ye Duke of Monmouth had given them five Guinnys and desired him to change them one for silver wch hee accordingly did. And likewise one Browne who beate a Drume at ye sd play desired ye sd deponent to change him a Guinny and said that it was given to ye Drumers by ye Duke. And ye sd deponent further saith that he saw ye People that came to see these sports and doth beleive that the number of them was at least 4000. And y' ye sd Earle of Macclesfield did by his servants desire ye greatest part of ye housholders in ye neighbourhood to wait upon ye sd Duke on Munday ye 18th onward on his jorney as farr as Congleton, wch is 4 miles on ye way. And that ye sd Duke did on ye sd Munday goe away from Gawsworth attended wth many gentlemen and such of ye neighbourhood as were desired to goe as aforesaid.
