Proofs of the Truth of Religions, etc., not deducible from Results, according to Human Standards. 1. The proof of the Truth of all Faiths, Philosophies, and Religions is not to be found in their worldly prosperity, their affluence, their numerical strength, their comparative antiquity, nor even in their moral, intellectual, and beneficent results, according to any human standards or criteria. For all these evidences are producible to prove the Truth of every false doctrine, false faith, every fetish and fundamentally erroneous Religion, Philosophy, or Cult which has appeared and given its contribution to the general perplexity of Mankind. Turn Eastward, turn Westward, and, wherever you look, there are innumerable Religions, Cults, and Philosophical Movements, all prospering, all wealthy, all influential, all beneficent to the souls that are their devotees. Their names are legion. In the East, there are many Sects of the Hindoos, Brahmans, Buddhists, Confucians, Taoists, Parsees, Theosophists, etc.--almost as many as there are Temples dedicated to their worship. In the West, there are Christians, divided into Catholics and Protestants, both subdivided into innumerable Churches and Sects; there are Unsectarian Sects and Communities galore, Unitarians, Positivists, Deists, Agapemones, Ironigites, Zionites, Christian Scientists, Salvation Armies, Mormons, and many more curious and grotesque parodies of the Religion of Jesus, too numerous to mention.
